This is a Curse of Strahd campaign
-------- Characters ----------
Dungeon Master (DM): AJ
Adventurer: Tora, Satyr Wild Magic Sorceress, Level 2, as
played by Shauna
Sidekick: Faolan, Wolf Warrior (TCoE) level 2
--------- Chapter 1 - Lost in a Fog ---------
DM: You walk along a winding road with your sidekick, Faolan, a juvenile wolf with golden hair. He's been your companion since he was a cub, and is a year old. As you walk, a fog creeps up around you causing your surroundings to disappear. You can only see a few feet in front of you. Faolan seems nervous, maybe even fearful, as you continue to walk along the trail in the fog.
Go ahead and describe your character
Tora: "Where are we headed again, Faolan?"
DM: He looks at you and cants his head, like 'I thought you
were leading this?...'
Tora: "Ohhh... right... just feel a little discombobulated at
the moment..." said Tora, a satyr with sorceress abilities who is not a stranger
to the wild... she has golden brown hair and green eyes who stands no taller
than 5' tall.
DM: This fog is indeed strange. You and Faolan continue to
walk along the fey forest path and the fog seems to push in closer around you.
After a while you are able to see some of your surroundings.
You see the shape of buildings, and you can hear the sound
of your hooves on cobble stone... You've walked into a town, but you don't
remember a town nearby.
Tora: "Hmm ... I don't
remember this coming across this town before... let's see if they're friendly." Tora is accustomed to people thinking she's talking to herself but Faolan is
the best company and listener she's ever had, so it has never bothered her what
the folk think.
DM: The gravel road leads to a village, its tall houses dark
as tombstones. Nestled among these solemn dwellings are a handful of closed-up
shops. Even the tavern is shut tight.
A soft whimpering draws your eye toward a pair of children
standing in the middle of an otherwise lifeless street.
Tora: "Children? What
time do you suppose it is?"
DM: It's nighttime
Tora: "Suppose they could be lost. Maybe we should check on
them."
DM: Faolan looks nervous with his tail between his legs but
follows you as he doesn't want to be alone
Tora: "Hello there mates, are you kids alright?"
DM: There are two children, one younger holding a doll. They're dressed in fine clothing, and appear to be sad or scared.
After shushing the boy, the girl turns to you and says, “There’s a monster in our house!” She then points to a tall brick row house that has seen better days. Its windows are dark. It has a gated portico on the ground floor, and the rusty gate is slightly ajar. The houses on either side are abandoned, their windows and doors boarded up.
She speaks with a thick accent, kinda like a Romanian
accent, eastern European
Tora: "Are your parents in there?"
DM: "Our baby brother is in there. He's on the third floor. I
don't know where my parents are."
Tora: "Oh dear... Well, I, uh we can try to help, right? Faolan? Can you tell us anything about the monster?"
DM: "I don't know what it looks like, but I've heard its
terrible howls."
Tora: "Stay here kids... and take care of each other. We'll go after your brother." I quietly go towards the window to see if I can gather any information before entering.
DM: It's dark inside, you can't make out too many details. You don't have darkvision.
Tora: I try the doorknob trying my best not to make a creaking
noise
DM: The portico, or gate, is unlocked, but unfortunately its rusted, and squeaks eerily as you open it. Oil lamps hang from the portico ceiling by chains, flanking a set of oaken doors that open into a grand foyer.
Tora: "Let's move quickly and quietly... we just want to get the boy to safety."
DM: Faolan is nervously whining but will follow you.
Tora: I quickly move towards the next door while trying to console Faolan as well as keep an eye out for any movement. "Let's just find the stairs. One thing at a time buddy."
DM: No movement, and the door is unlocked. Your passive
stealth scores are sufficient for now.
Hanging on the south wall of the foyer is a shield
emblazoned with a coat-of-arms (a stylized golden windmill on a red field),
flanked by framed portraits of stony-faced aristocrats.
Tora: I gently open this door too trying to quickly assess
the room before we enter and find our way to the door or stairs, whatever we
find
DM: Mahogany-framed double doors leading from the foyer to
the main hall are set with panes of stained glass.
Sorry, I got ahead of you. You enter a foyer.
Tora: We rush to the next set of doors... "See, we got this."
DM: It's still pretty dark in here.
Tora: I take an extra moment to try to focus on this room..
I start pulling out a torch to light
DM: Go ahead and minus one torch off your inventory.
The light of the torch gives you 20 feet of bright light,
and 20 more feet of dim light. You can see everything in this room.
A wide hall runs the width of the house, with a black marble
fireplace at one end and a sweeping, red marble staircase at the other. Mounted
on the wall above the fireplace is a longsword with a windmill cameo worked
into the hilt. The wood-paneled walls are ornately sculpted with images of
vines, flowers, nymphs, and satyrs.
Tora: "These people have great tastes."
DM: Besides the stairs, you got 5 doors that lead out of this hall to side rooms. Make a perception check.
(Tora rolled a 12 Perception check)
DM: As you admired the Nymphs and Satyrs, you see serpents
and skulls inconspicuously woven into the wall designs.
Tora: "Rrrr... Yeah, let's keep moving. Do you see where to
next Faolan?"
DM: He's shaking
Tora: "Right- the stairs let's go!" I quickly check the
integrity of the stairs, and if I see anything suspiciously unsafe.
DM: It's sound. It ascends counter-clockwise to a landing. There is a door immediately on your right, then two sets of double doors in the main hallway, each flanked by two sets of armor that have wolf faced helmets. The stairs continue upwards as well.
Tora: "Let's keep going up- the girl said the 3rd floor."
DM: The stairs end at the third floor; a suit of armor sits
along the far wall. You have a hall to the right with a set of double doors,
and a single door. And you have two doors on the left.
Tora: "Hey bud, can you be brave and see if you can sniff out
where the child is? Maybe a poop stench, or breathing?"
DM: really?...
did you just ask him to smell for poop stench?
Tora: I mean, the kid probably soiled his diaper
She said baby
DM: With a 14 with advantage due to his keen senses, he
doesn't smell poop stench, but he wrinkles his nose at the decaying smells he
has been smelling.
Tora: That's one of their 3 main activities they take part
in
DM: poop, cry, sleep?
Tora: "Alright then. First be door on the left and we'll make
our way around clockwise unless you have a better idea."
DM: what about eat
Tora: Milk?
Gross, rotten milk.
DM: As you cross the landing to the left, the suit of armor
turns to follow you, and without warning takes a swipe at you!
Roll for initiative
(Faolan rolled 19, Tora rolled 7, and the Armor rolled 2)
DM: Since you were both surprised, he gets a free round, and
tries to slam both of you.
a 12 will hit you
a 17 hits Faolan
you take 6 damage...
and same for Faolan
Faolan attempts to bite the armor, but misses with an 11
actually, he has pack tactics
so, he gets adv
he hits with an 18
and does 8 damage
your turn now
Tora: He’s too close for comfort. Tora Does a misty step to
appear a distance behind the armor to prepare for range attacks.
DM: Misty step? sounds good. that's a bonus action, go ahead
and make an attack
Tora: Fire bolt
22 to attack with 4 fire damage if it hits
DM: hit, roll for damage
oh. you got it already. haha.
A streak of fire flashes from your staff across the landing and hits the armor!
The armor tries to slam Faolan twice, and hits once for 8
damage.
Faolan heals for 6 points with its second wind, but misses a
bite attack with a 13
Your turn
Tora: "Quit hurting my friend!" I throw a chaotic bolt!
DM: roll an attack roll
You have inspiration, want to use it for that 7?
Tora: Missed-natty 1
Yes
16!
DM: ... It misses. Chaotic energy leaps from the end of your staff, but strikes the wall right behind the armor.
The armor brings both of his gauntlets down on Faolan and knocks him out.
two hits for 12 damage
Your turn
Tora: I grab Faolan and bolt for that first door on the left
DM: It's open and you go in....
Tora: I shut the door behind me as well
